Lateral Thinking: Creativity Step by Step by Edward de Bono
It is emphasized that there is no antagonism between vertical (traditional) thinking - a logical step-by-step thinking toward one solution - and lateral thinking - the process of using information to bring about creativity and insight restructuring to produce many viable solutions. Vertical thinking is immensely useful but one needs to enhance its usefulness by adding creativity and tempering its rigidity. Lateral thinking can be learned, practiced, and used - leading to new ideas. Lateral thinking and vertical thinking are complementary; both are necessary to make the best possible use of the mind.
